Reasons to get excited about the festive season are as colorful as the gifts in Santa’s workshop. One big highlight of Christmas markets in Europe is the markets that spring up in towns and cities across the continent.

Cheering antidotes to the chilly nights, these twinkling havens of tradition are the place to feast on winter delights, ride carousels, sing along with carolers, and thaw hands round mugs of mulled wine and cornets of roasted chestnuts.

Seasonal customs are shared across the continent, but some markets sparkle brighter; from storybook events in Dresden and Strasbourg, historic gems in Salzburg and Colmar, and the animated Christmas markets of Poland.

Unorthodox events in singular settings for those who like to sprinkle festive spice on their winter adventures.

Ravenna Gorge Market, Germany

Deep in the Black Forest is where you’ll find one of the most unique and picturesque events this Christmas.

The Ravenna Gorge Christmas market nestles under the striking 58m (190ft) tall Ravenna Bridge. It is a scene from a fairytale, especially when snow settles on the wooded valley. It’s far from the biggest (around 40 chalets). But this is Germany, and they know how to dial up the Weihnachtsgeist with Glühwein or bowls of flaming feuerzangenbowle (AKA fire tongs punch).

The glowing chalets silhouetted against the Black Forest dark sell local crafts like intricate cuckoo clocks and handblown glass ornaments.

Wafting over the snowcapped treetops is the aroma of grilled game sourced from the surrounding forest. Although sweet tooths will want to make a beeline for the irresistible and essential Black Forest gateau.

Entrance isn’t free – €6.50 (day) / €8.50 (night) for adults. There’s parking (€5.00- €10.00), or you can catch a shuttle bus from several nearby towns or the delightful city of Freiburg or go by train. Book early as tickets fly out.

You can also drive from Stuttgart (1.5 hours) or Colmar (1.5 hours). Colmar is home to another contender for the prettiest Christmas market in Europe, and would pair beautifully for a full day of seasonal entertainment.

Fraueninsel Market, Germany

The Frauenchiemsee Christmas market is one of Germany’s most extraordinary Christmas markets.

Lake Chiemsee in the Bavarian Alps is the backdrop. Tiny Frauenchiemsee Island is where it unfolds. It’s another magical setting, reached by boat from Prien am Chiemsee (€8.50 for adults; entrance to the market is free).

Aside from around 90 huts doling out German and European delectables and handicrafts, there is the chance to visit the abbey. Formed in 782, 21 sisters still call the aptly-named Women Island (Fraueninsel) home.

The market only happens on a few weekends (dates below). Catch a train from Munich (under 2 hours to Prien am Chiemsee) or Salzburg (50 mins). Among its many other charms, Salzburg made it onto our list of the best European Christmas markets. Ideal for a festive couplet and someone to lay your hat for a night. Unless you join the nunnery and never leave!

Unsurprisingly, Germany is home to some of Europe’s most highly rated and underrated Christmas markets. But the Frauenchiemsee Christmas market — the only one on an island — is in a class of its own.

Valkenburg Christmas Market, Netherlands

After visiting hidden Christmas markets in a forest and an island, it’s time to go underground at the Valkenburg Christmas Market in the Netherlands.

You won’t unearth any cave elves; they’re presumably busy further north. But you will find glittering decorations and stalls loaded with artisanal wares and seasonal foods in two caves.

There is no shortage of gifts for the impossible to please in the mazey Municipal Cave burrowed into the Marl Quarry and the Velvet Cave beneath the ruins of a castle. Both caves are decked with boughs of holly and nativity scenes, so you can simply drink in the cozy atmosphere. And may be a mug or two of glühwein.

Outside the caves, a cable car will whisk you to the Wilhelmina Tower, which doubles as the region’s tallest illuminated Christmas tree. There’s oodles of family entertainment nearby, including amusement parks and Valkenburg Castle ruins. And if you crave more festive frolics, head above ground to the Valkenburg Christmas Town. Now, that’s what we call a winter wonderland.

Valkenburg aan de Geul is just 14 km (8.5 miles) from scenic and vibrant Maastricht. You can catch a bus, and there are car parks on site. But you can also stay overnight in the Christmas town for the full spectrum Yuletide experience.

Tickets to the Christmas Market in the bigger Municipal Cave cost €9/10 (weekdays/weekends). The organizers recommend a weekday visit if you want to avoid crowds. Save time and book online for the markets and other activities.
