Blanes Fireworks Competition in Spain
An epic five-day pyrotechnic competition from July 21-26 in the city of Blanes on the Costa Brava.

Every year from July 22 to 26, about 150,000 spectators descend upon the Costa Brava in Spain to witness the Blanes Fireworks Competition. During the five-day event, known as the Concurs de Focs d’Artifici, five pyrotechnic companies take part in one of Europe’s most prestigious fireworks competitions. But the real winners are the spectators. With the fireworks taking off from the iconic Sa Palomera Rock, the lights dazzle the eyes and paint the beaches a nighttime rainbow of sand and seashells. Without a doubt, the Blanes Fireworks Competition is a must-see event for anyone who loves fireworks and is seeking a memorable European slow travel summer experience. Indeed, the town of Blanes itself is worth a visit on its own, offering visitors charming streets and spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Blanes Fireworks Competition is open to the public free of charge. Fireworks start at 10:30 p.m and usually last around 20 minutes.
How did the Blanes Fireworks Competition originate?
The first mention of fireworks shows in Blanes is from 1891, although it is unclear when or why it became a yearly event. What is known is that the event came to an end in 1936 when the Spanish Civil War started. But locals revived the tradition in 1944, and by 1970 it had evolved into a yearly competition intended to promote tourism in Blanes.
What is Blanes Fireworks Competition about?
The fireworks are meant to represent the spirit of Blanes’ Festa Major, a festival dedicated to the town’s patron saint, Santa Anna. To celebrate, the Blanes fireworks competition brings together five fireworks companies from around the world, each showcasing their unique artistry and pyrotechnic skills over the course of five consecutive nights.
On the evening of July 27, two judging panels — a professional jury and a “people’s” jury — announce the winner. The grand prize includes €6,000 and the bragging rights that come with the coveted and jewel-adorned silver trophy, Trofeo Vila de Blanes. Additionally, the winner earns the honor of participating in the following year’s competition.
